COE Group plc, a leading developer and supplier of advanced video surveillance systems, has significantly upgraded its X-Net MPEG-4 video codec software by leveraging the power of the Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) digital signal processors (DSPs) to add video analytics (X-Net VI) and dual streaming features for recording. This software upgrade is available for the installed base of current generation codecs and for selected previous generation systems.

COE developed the industry’s first 4CIF full frame rate MPEG-4 codec based on the TI TMS320C6416 DSP.  The high performance TMS320C64x™ DSP generation allows COE to retain its reputation for high end video quality.  COE has been able to evolve from this start point by leveraging the robust processors in TI’s DSP portfolio and the benefits are now being realized as increasingly powerful software downloads are made available remotely with no requirement to change the hardware.  COE has collaborated with members of TI’s DSP Third Party Network to maximize speed to market of these new features.

COE X-Net VI is a video analytics system based on distributed intelligence which applies pre-analysis to the raw digital video data in the codec DSP prior to compression and transmission.  Pre-analysis maximizes the accuracy of the analysis process to result in reduced false alarm rates.  COE has worked closely with Agent Video Intelligence(TM), Inc. (Agent VI(TM)), the global leader in enterprise-grade video analytics to integrate Agent VI’s™  patented video analysis range into the COE X-Net codec.

The Agent VI™ model uses raw video pre-analysis to reduce the processing required on the central server.  This allows the scalable capacity of the central server to be applied flexibly across any selection of the streamed video.  Numerous rules and super rules can be applied to any one video stream to further reduce false alarm rates.

Through this approach, an operator may be alerted to significant events automatically to maximize effectiveness and reduce fatigue. “Our approach harnesses the latent power within each codec and couples it to a multiple rule analysis engine that is simple to configure and operate.  The result is a fast and reliable system for detecting many types of objects from baggage to humans.  Agent VI™ already has operational systems in airports, rail, city centre and high security sites that run many hundreds of cameras,” said Dieter Kondek, president and CEO of Agent VI.

To complement the video analytics capability, COE’s X-Net codec also provides dual video streams on demand for recording alarms and overlays.  This allows the most efficient use of network bandwidth and recording capacity and the features have been designed into a range of recording systems from COE and from COE’s partners.

Andrew Wallace, Chief Executive Officer of COE said, “Integrated analytics, dual streaming and other features place COE’s codecs at the core of integrated IP video management and recording systems.  Customers can choose either COE’s integrated solutions or multi vendor solutions using selected COE products.  We continue to deliver new features to our installed base and we have achieved this flexibility by selecting a DSP architecture and developing close partnerships with other TI-based developers.”

“COE harnesses the performance, flexibility and peripherals of TI’s digital signal processors to apply pre-analysis," said Cyril Clocher, business development manager for TI's DSP group in Europe.  "Only digital signal processing offers the level of sophistication to handle intensive functions like video analytics.  With it, COE’s technology maximizes the accuracy of the analysis process."

COE will be demonstrating the X-Net product suite at IFSEC 2007 to be held at the NEC, Birmingham, UK on stand 19155 in Hall 19.  The demonstrations will cover real time video compression and viewing, analytics – both motion and non-motion detection for baggage, people and vehicle management, network video recording and fibre optic multi-channel transmission technologies.
