Sector: Roads & Tunnels

Martignano Tunnel runs for 2.9Km underground. COE was commissioned to provide video transmission equipment for safety and security in the tunnel

Project brief

The need for security and safety in tunnels of this length and vehicle capacity is paramount, as vehicle breakdowns and accidents represent a major risk to other road users. Thus the requirement for a camera infastructure to provide real time images of the entire roadway is a key tool in the management of tunnels.

Analysis

At Martignano Tunnel, the requirement for a comprehensive video surveillance network to monitor traffic activity and alert of dangers to road users from accidents or security risks was paramount. The necessity of this network was such that if the network is compromised, so would be the operations of the tunnel.

Solution

COE specified a solution which included a dual redundancy fibre ring providing IP Ethernet connectivity throughout the tunnel. To compliment the cameras, Intelligent Analytics software was also integrated into operations of 26 of the close to 50 cameras installed throughout the tunnel. This inclusion allowed the automatic monitoring of events and alerting to potential risks. To aid in the management of the video received, COE’s VMS video management solution was also included in the specification for this project.

Benefits

  • Dual Redundant transmission system to eliminate risk of system downtime.
  • Hybrid IP Ethernet and fibre optic system ensures best of both worlds delivery of solution.
  • Seamless integration of 3rd party analytics for event alerting.
  • COE equipment operates seamlessly in the harsh demanding tunnel environment.
